A big issue with bamboo cutting board is its smell. If you used it for prolong periods without any care or maintenance, it will result in your board being smelly.  Here are some cleaning tips to help you remove the smell of cutting boards.

Make sure you clean the boards after every use. For normal cleaning, just use warm water and a bit of detergent.  Apply the detergent and rub the board gently to avoid damaging it. If you are cutting meat, make sure to use some bleach as a cleaning agent to kill off the batercia from the meat.

You should also use protective oil once every month to maintain the board’s appearance and shine. For best effects, oliver oil is great as they have minerals that are good for the boards. Simple heat the up the oil before use and apply it to the surface. Leave it on for about half an hour before cleaning the oil away with warm waer. Again, don’t use too much rubbing force to avoid damaging the board.

If you board already smells, you can do the following.  Use baking soda and sprinkle some of it over the board. Allow the sode to sit on the board for about half an hour. Wash the soda off after that.  If oyur odor is alkaline in nature, using white vinegar rather than baking soda would be the ideal choice.

Taking care of your bamboo cutting board can prolong its life. Here are some simple bamboo cutting board care instructions that you can follow to better care for your bamboo cutting board. Bamboo is a great material for making into cutting board. They are more solid than the typical wood used. In addition, bamboo is also more replenishable, making them more eco friendly than other types of plants. If you take some care of your cutting boards, they can last you quite a while.

Daily car
Your bamboo cutting board should be washed every every use.  I recommend using warm water, mixed with a small dose of detergent to get the job done. When washing the boards, use a gentle rubbing motion. Carefully wash the bacteria off so that the wood will not be damaged by excessive rubbing.

If you are using the board to cut meat, I recommend that you use bleach as a cleansing agent to kill off the bacteria from the meat. If not, these bacteria tend to cause damage to the bamboo after a prolong time.  Alternatively you can also sanitize the bamboo cutting boards using a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Make sure that you rinse the board properly after applying either of use as they are not healthy for human consumption.

Monthly care
For monthly care, it is good to apply a protective layer of oil to maintain the beauty and shine of the bamboo. I recommend you use olive oil as they have the best protective benefits. Before you first use your board, apply a layer of olive over it and then so it once every month. Before the application, heat the oil gently over a small fire and then use a cloth to apply the oil over the cutting board. Once the oil is applied, leave it there for about 30 minutes to allow the board to absorb the oil. After which, clean off the olive oil using the steps outline above (see daily care).

How to buy bamboo cutting board

September 30th, 2009 by tedwilson

Bamboo cutting boards are an addition to any kitchen. Bamboo itself is a very versatile and useful material and and products made from it will typically be durable and strong. These boards are functional, fashionable, as well as affordable.

There are several factors you should take into account when buying a bamboo cutting board. I will go through these factors in the following paragraphs so that you know how to buy one.

One of the important buying consideration is the size of your kitchen. For a small kitchen, you will want to get something that is smaller. This is because a cutting board is by nature occupies lots of space so a large board will cut up a lot of your kitchen space if you have a small kitchen.

Also, you need to consider the number of people you will be cooking for in your family. For a large family, the amount of food you are cooking will usually be lots more than what a family with fewer members will require. Hence, in this case, you will need a much larger bamboo cutting board so that you can cut and slices larger volumes of food.

When choosing your board, do look out for whether it fits into your design theme. If you are trying to redesign you kitchen around an Asian theme then your bamboo cutting boards are a good place to start. However, to get a truly Asia feel in your kitchen you will want to add other kitchen accessories to its décor. For example you may want to add in Asian themed tiles, use an Asian inspired color scheme for your kitchen, and you may want to bring in live bamboo plants into your kitchen for a touch of life.

The price of a bamboo cutting board is very affordable. On most shopping sites like Amazon, you can get it as cheaply as under $30. These boards, with proper care and maintenance, can last well beyond 5 years so you are really quite a good value for your purchase.  If you need a step by step guide on how to care for your bamboo cutting board, follow the previous link to read my article on it.
